D3559 (08444) was constructed at the Derby works in 1958, one of 996 locomotives built between 1952 and 1962.
A further 26 locomotives were built and re-geared for faster running (27.5mph) to become the class 09 (09/0), together with another 171 similarly built locos but having different engines / transmissions including our own Class 10 (D3452). Bringing the overall total build of this type of shunter to 1193, the most numerous type of locomotive ever in the UK.
D3559 (08444) came to Bodmin in full working order as 08444 in Feb 1987.
It had been withdrawn from Cardiff Canton in Oct 1986 and was in standard BR blue livery when it arrived.
During its 25 years or so at Bodmin 08444 has had 2 intermediate overhauls and repaints and been a reliable performer. It can normally be found at Bodmin General station shunting or out on the line with permanent way trains.
It is currently in BR green livery with full 'WASP' stripes together with the later British Railways Crest.
