English Electric Class 50 042 'TRIUMPH' (D442)

D442 entered Traffic on 5th October 1968, having been built at the Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le Willows. It was one of 50 locos required for the West Coast Main Line speed improvements.

From 1972, they were gradually transferred to the western region to help with the withdrawal of the Hydraulic Classes. Due to being over complicated in their design, availability was poor and a refurbishment program was instigated in the early 1980’s.

They finished their front class passenger work on the Waterloo Exeter services, with the farewell railtour running in March 1994.

The new tops number 50 042 was applied in Dec 1973 and was named ‘Triumph' in October 1978. Refurbishment took place in May 1982 before withdrawal on 15th October 1990.

50 042 was purchased by the group in November 1991, from Laira depot in Plymouth, where it had been stored since withdrawal in October 1990. Arriving at Bodmin on 10th March 1992, being hauled from Lostwithiel by 37 671 having been taken there by 37 673.

Restoration to get the loco working consisted of replacment of the stolen traction motors and ETH cables, freeing up the seized power unit, turbo chargers and restoring the wrecked cabs. The engine was first started on 12th August 1992 and moved under its own power on 25th November of that year.

Initially restored into Large Logo blue, 2006 saw it repainted into all over blue, during 2015 'Triumph' received its current livery, Large Logo blue with black roof.
